If anyone could prove that age is nothing but a number, it was Maggie Kuhn.

The activist and founder of the Gray Panthers, an American advocacy organization for the elderly, was born on this day in Buffalo in 1905.

In 1970, after working for the Presbyterian Church in New York for a quarter of a century, Miss Kuhn retired, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 65.

As a result, she worked with fellow retirees to start a group that would be called the Gray Panthers (a reference to the Black Panthers), which worked to bridge the gap between the young and the old and addressed other social issues.

Miss Kuhn remained involved with the organization until her death at age 89 in 1995.

“I’m an old woman,” she told The Times in 1972. “I have gray hair, many wrinkles and arthritis in both hands. And I celebrate my freedom from bureaucratic restraints that once held me.”

She embraced her age and was unapologetic about it.

On her 85th birthday, she told a group of seniors in Vermont in 1991: “I made a sacred vow that I would do something outrageous, at least once a week.”

How well recognized the certificate is remains to be seen.

If you’re short on time though and want to add something blockchain-related to your CV, this could be a good option. A basic knowledge of computer science and cryptocurrency awareness is a requirement.


University at Buffalo – Blockchain Specialization Certificate
Time: 4-6 months
Cost: $39 per month (Coursera Membership)

This certificate in Blockchain Specialization is offered by the University at Buffalo and can be completed through the Coursera online platform. It covers Blockchain Basics, Smart Contracts, DApps and Blockchain Platforms. This IBM course is more of a practical online business building platform. It teaches candidates how to kick-start a blockchain network of their own using the open-source Hyperledger Fabric framework. It covers business blockchain concepts, distributed ledger technology, and the IBM blockchain platform.

Users will learn to develop applications before growing an idea and eventually deploying a blockchain. For anyone wanting to launch the next big ICO, this could be the course for you.

Crypto Stock Exchange Operator Pleads Guilty to Fraud

The man behind two now-defunct cryptocurrency investment sites has pled guilty to securities fraud and obstruction of justice charges.

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced the guilty plea on Monday, coming days after it was reported that Montroll was close to a deal with prosecutors. Jon Montroll was arrested back in February by U.S. authorities, as CoinDesk reported at the time, in connection with securities investment platform BitFunder and crypto exchange site WeExchange.

Montroll was accused of running an unregistered securities exchange, as well as providing info to investigators that was described as “misleading.” Montroll also allegedly “converted a portion of WeExchange users’ bitcoins to his personal use without the users’ knowledge or consent,” according to a statement published Monday.

He notably was accused of lying about the number of bitcoins available to BitFunder and WeExchange users after the latter was hacked, as well as committing perjury while testifying to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

WeExchange lost around 6,000 bitcoins at the time of the hack, which left the platform insolvent, as previously reported.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said in a statement Monday:

“As he admitted today, Jon Montroll deceived his investors and then attempted to deceive the SEC. He repeatedly lied during sworn testimony and misled SEC staff to avoid taking responsibility for the loss of thousands of his customers’ bitcoins.”

Though the case was originally brought by the SEC, the FBI and Southern District of New York Attorney’s office prosecuted Montroll under criminal charges. U.S. District Judge Richard Berman will sentence Montroll at an undetermined future date.

The biggest obstacle here: There’s no place for scooters, physically.

“They’re too fast for the sidewalk, they’re too slow for traffic, and they’re too slow for bike lanes, so there isn’t a safe space for them,” Ms. Kaufman said. (Most can go up to 15 miles per hour.) “The focus here is on backless bikes and electric-assist bikes because those are the speeds of New York.”

Even so, exploring travel alternatives remains top-of-mind for some city residents. With the L train shutdown less than a year away, scooters could offer “a great advantage” to those affected, according to Ms. Kaufman, who led a Rudin Center report on ways to mitigate commutes during the closure of the subway line.

“We’re going to have hundreds of thousands of people needing to find new modes of transportation,” she said. “Because there will be overcrowding on other subway lines, we might as well provide a variety of modes like rideshare and bus-bridges and, of course, bike share. However, not every person can or is willing to ride a bike.”

Scooters have a lower barrier to entry, she added.

“You’re generally not scooting in traffic — you’re generally on the sidewalk — and it’s easier to learn to navigate a scooter, and you don’t necessarily need a helmet like you do with a bike,” she said, “so people see it as an easier mode. A faster mode than walking, but not as labor intensive or stressful as biking.”
