Some things in life you don’t expect to work well together. Peanut butter and roast beef. A friendly Microsoft vs Apple company baseball game. Digital marketing products and a good, old-fashioned 5K run.
And yet, just this very weekend, at the Daytona 5K and Fun Walk, four intrepid Web Daytona representatives laced up, stretched out their hamstrings, and hit the track, to represent the digital industry.
What happened next was an athletic revolution.
The Daytona 5K and Fun Walk
Currently, in its 14th year, the Daytona 5K is a complimentary event held just ahead of the world-famous Rolex 24 endurance race. Community members, business representatives, and public figures from Daytona Beach gather in the early morning darkness to take a lap on one of the most famous race tracks in the world.
And believe us when we say “darkness”, we mean the “wait, is my clock wrong? It’s so dark,” kind of darkness.
Which didn’t stop internet marketing company, Web Daytona, CEO and founder, Gary Vela, search engine marketing director, Daniel Pohl, director of social media marketing, Dimitri Summerlin, and director of search engine marketing, Ako Stark from donning their Sunday best and taking to the track with the thronging masses last Saturday.
Stark recalled the intensity of the race with a distant look in his eye. “In the beginning of the race, it was cold. There were a lot of people – it was chaos. Anarchy around the field.”
He added: “I am proud of myself for winning the first thirty seconds of the race.”
Gathered under the bright halogen lightbulbs of the Daytona International Speedway, the Web Daytona team warmed up in dress suits and sneakers, out to make an impression among the crowds of vest-wearing, sweatband runners. Vela, the driving force behind the company’s push to attend the 5k, shared his experience: “Did I enjoy it? No. Well, yes! Wearing that suit was hot! I enjoyed the first ten minutes of it, and then it was painful. But I knew, if I kept pushing past the pain, I could just keep going. Then I just kind of got into the zone, and that was it.”
Still, in spite of the challenge of running in a full suit, Vela expressed no regrets. “I guess we could have decided to go with something more fluffy or feathery, but we decided to go with the suit because it was more of a statement. This is who we are.”
Asked what he would do differently, Dimitri was eager to dispense advice on competitive running: “First off, I would condition myself, at least a month in advance. I would run at least a mile, each day, for thirty days. And, prior to the race, I probably would have been stretching more. Breathing exercises. Meditation, very important.”
Stark, the self-confessed winner of the first thirty seconds of the race and resident motivational speaker, waxed lyrical on the link between running and promoting digital marketing products. “The moment you walk up to that start line, in your mind, you’ve created a goal: to cross the finish line, which is 5K away. But, when you’re not an athlete when you don’t exercise and train every day, you feel weak.”
“This is a temporary weakness – it’s all in your mind. The moment you start running, towards your goal, to cross the finish line, the first few seconds, you feel good. You feel happy. You feel excited. As you’re running towards your goal, you get a cramp. It doesn’t feel good, but it’s tolerable. It slows down your speed, but you’re still going.”
“As a few minutes pass, you get another cramp, which drops your speed even more and causes you pain. But you’re still going. You’re getting leg cramps – they feel heavy, they feel tight like they can’t move anymore. Soon after, you find you’re about to collapse because everything in your body hurts.”
“But you know if you don’t keep going, you will never cross the finish line and achieve your goal.”
“At this point, you’re mentally exhausted, but you’re still moving towards your goal. You’re not running, but you’re slowly moving towards it. Eventually, after a while, even if you walk or crawl, you cross that finish line and achieve your goal.”
“You see, in life, starting a business is the same concept: at first, you’re excited. It feels good. You’re happy, you’re moving forward. But then, life hits you. People doubt you. You doubt yourself. You doubt your abilities. But the only way to succeed is to grind and keep going. It doesn’t matter how fast you move. As long as you’re moving toward your goal. It might take you a day, a week, a year. But the most important thing is staying strong in your mind and moving forward until you reach your goal. Because that is how you achieve success. By never looking back, but forward.”
In one of his many roles as in-house photographer, East had the pleasure of securing epic shots of the Web Daytona team crossing the finish line in a haze of sweat and cut ribbons. Asked how he enjoyed spending the morning in a golf cart, he said: “It was fun! Unexpected, but it gave me a very nice opportunity to get some really great photographs.”
“I don’t see the people running the race with me as competition,” said Vela. “I see them as an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to prove myself. I’m not someone who just says he’s going to do it, I’m somebody who makes it through to the end. When you’re running a business, it’s about being in it for the long term – three minutes for running a race, if you’re not accustomed to it, is hard. Three years, for businesses, is usually the breaking point. If you make it past three years, you’re destined for greatness.”
A Digital Marketing Agency, Sets A New Bar For Sportsmanship
While the plucky digital marketing manager underdogs from Daytona Beach may not have streaked through the finish line in a well-dressed, suit-and-tie blur, they accomplished something much less common.
The true meaning of sportsmanship.
The right digital marketing products and services, from web design to SEO, can make your marketing goals a reality. Get in touch with Web Daytona, and discover web marketing solutions to help put you ahead of the rest.

HR Compliance: 5 Mistakes You Don’t Know You’re Making
HR compliance is a serious issue in any workplace. Regardless of what you do, there are specific guidelines in place to safeguard you and your employees.
Failing to follow these guidelines can be dangerous as well as costly when something goes wrong.
There’s a misconception that companies can pick and choose whether to classify their employees as exempt or non-exempt. The Department of Labor has extremely specific rules outlining exempt and non-exempt positions.
Always remember, menial jobs don’t mean the people working them are exempt from being paid overtime. Their job duties and rate of pay factor into it, all contributing to whether the employee is exempt or not.
By way of an example, a manager might assume that their accounting clerk is fulfilling some sort of white-collar position and that they’re somehow exempt. When a person fulfilling a job has no decision-making authority, however, it’s actually more likely the position is non-exempt and, therefore, eligible for overtime compensation.
These classifications are important because record-keeping and timesheets will differ, based on your employee’s status.
Incorrect Hiring Paperwork
This may be one of the simples processes that many companies forget to check every year. The correct eligibility-to-work documents are crucial to hiring a viable employee, and failing to record or document them can get you into hot legal water.
Before filing any paperwork, make sure to get dates and signatures confirming eligibility documentation in the form of the I-9. More often than you’d expect, employees fail to provide the correct supporting documentation, intentionally or not. A driver’s license or social security card may be necessary, but if the employer doesn’t request them, they’ll go by the wayside.
Ignoring Safety Regulations
Being a business owner doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be good at managing all of the red tape of the various important onsite regulations. You’ll have to review the State and Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules, specifically, to see how they to your business, employees and office space. The General Duty Clause requires employers to provide a location free of perceived risks to all employees, regardless of the size of the business.
Not Complying With Rapid Growth
Rapid growth sounds like something good and it often is. More employees means more work, which means a better shot at increasing your output and targeting more paying customers. During these fortunate periods of growth, however, it can be easy to get wrapped up in your successes and forget that more employees also means more exposure to compliance.
The cost of compliance, for instance, leads to businesses reclassifying workers as independent contractors, in an attempt to stay below the 50-person bar. Employees, however, can’t claim to be contractors with the same responsibilities as full-timers, however, without violating Labor Code regulations. Unpaid internships, similarly, are usually non-compliant according to the Department of Labor, making this a risky tactic as well.
Not Staying Current
Of all the HR mistakes a business leader could make, failing to keep up with the latest regulations that apply to the organization. Agency and employment laws have changed tremendously in the last few years, alone, and this isn’t a trend. It’s the industry, and you should stay aware of the latest policies managing:
- sick leave
- employee privacy
- employment regulations
- workplace safety and health standards
- salary regulations
- requirements for records management
- overtime laws
- discrimination and sexual harassment laws
- leave acts according to your region
HR Compliance: A Matter Of Safety
In the modern workplace, HR compliance is a matter of safety as well as corporate policy. Keep yourself and your employees taken care of with HR services from a trusted name, for a better, more reliable service.
